Chris Stuart

Bluegrass Rhythm Guitar

& Songwriting Workshops

Saturday, September 11 - Open to all levels!

• 10:30am-noon:  Bluegrass Rhythm Guitar

The great bluegrass flatpicker Tony Rice once said that he's proudest not of his lead playing, but of his rhythm. Even if you're a fancy flatpicker, 90% of what you play in a band or accompanying yourself will be rhythm, and it's a lot more nuanced and intricate than some people assume. Chris Stuart will teach you the basics and beyond in this 90-minute workshop on bluegrass rhythm guitar. Learn fundamental picking patterns (boom-chuck to boom-a-chick-a), alternating bass strings, G-runs, runs in chord changes, kick-offs, how to back up other instruments, three-quarter time, accompanying yourself, and endings (including the essential upchuck ending).

• 1:30-3pm:  Bluegrass Songwriting

In this 90-minute workshop, Chris Stuart (co-writer of the 2009 IBMA Song of the Year and first-place winner of the MerleFest songwriting contest) will concentrate on what makes a good bluegrass song. You can bring your own songs to be critiqued in class. Topics will include looking at songs by the first generation of bluegrass songwriters (Bill Monroe, Lester Flatt, and Carter Stanley), ballads, up-tempo songs, some modern bluegrass songs. Also, how to look for ideas, how to start writing a song, the forms of bluegrass songs, pitching to bluegrass artists, publishing, and collecting royalties. If you've been writing songs for years or have never written a song before, you will get something out of this workshop.

$20 per workshop - $30 for both
