Things to Consider...

There is no secret to choosing the right guitar. Let your own taste be your guide.

The neck must fit comfortably in your hand, not only in the first position, but also at the 5th, 9th and 12th frets. Width is important, but shape is even more so. Scale length is another factor. But scale length has an impact on sound as well as playability.

Choosing and instrument
What style of music do you play?

The style of music you play is very important to the guitar you choose. That being said, there are very few situations where most guitars would not be acceptable.

Of course, there are situations where the style of music dictates a certain type of guitar, but the rules are not hard and fast.

Generally speaking, dreadnought guitars are used for Bluegrass and Country music, but that did not stop Gabor Szabo, the Brazilian Jazz guitarist from having a very successful career while playing Jazz on a Martin D-35. Nor did the fact that nylon strung guitars are most at home with Classical and Flamenco music, stop Jazz legends Antonio Carlos Jobim and Charlie Byrd from using classical guitars for their musical expression.

Do you want to say that Mother Maybell Carter shouldn't have used a Gibson L-5 archtop on the legendary Carter Family Country recordings? It's a personal choice.

Then again, we're probably not meant to go through life with only one guitar, are we?
