Old Time Music began in 1974 when music teacher Walt Richards and luthuer Bob Zink opened as "The New Expression". The business soon became known as the premier teaching outlet in San Diego County.

Mr. Zink, having moved on to become the purchasing agent for Taylor Guitars, Walt Richards decided that he would sell the retail part of the business.

After a transformation into the House of Strings, where Bob and Jean Thorward thrived for many years, the store has come full circle with new owners as of 2006, and Walt maintaining the reputation as the "New Expression School of Music" within the Old Time Music Store.
