In 1974, Walt Richards and Vickie Cottle, along with Mike Craig, formed The New Expression Folk Music Study Center in San Diego. The retail part of the center was later sold to George Thorword to become the House of Strings in North Park, and in May 2004, the House of Strings transformed into Acoustic Expressions music center located on University Avenue in North Park. A few years later, Acoustic Expressions became Old Time Music, in that same location. Old Time Music moved to the Morse Building on 30th Street in early 2011 and, with a name change, was reborn as New Expression Music.
All of our wonderful teachers are still here, busier than ever! In addition to music lessons we offer instructional jams, workshops and a variety of fun music events. For now, we're keeping our music school name, New Expression Music.
Our teachers remain true to the original credo that anyone can play a musical instrument if they have the right guidance, support and commitment. NEM is proud to be the home of teaching studios to fourteen veteran musicians/instructors who are dedicated to bringing the joys of music making into the lives of all who desire it. Each one is a superb musician in their own right, and each is an expert in teaching students to become accomplished players.
